1. EMPIRION REMIXES OF CUBANATE IN 1998

We're setting off with the Empirion mix of 'Voids' by Cubanate, but we need your help here. The vinyl release on TVT Records back in 1998 lists a running time of 6.25, but the duration of this version is 5.02. Over the years it was believed that Empirion recorded 2 remixes for Cubanate. We have their mix of 'Voids', but if another exists it needs to be documented. It is rumoured that a 2nd. track from Cubanate's 4th. studio album 'Interference' was remixed, but if this is the case we're pretty sure it was never released. For more information about the Empirion mixes of 'Voids', check out the Discography.

New Information / Many thanks to Douglas Sudia (received by e-mail):

'The Cubanate mix you just put up is a second, unreleased one...The other remix, the longer one, was the one they put on the vinyl release. This one, the 5 min one, was never released at all, only the other 6 min one which had a 4x4 beat.'

2. 'SEE YOURSELF' (XL RECORDINGS - 1997)

'See Yourself' was a radical departure away from the darker acid techno-tinged Empirion sound that had carried them to the threshold of greatness up until this 1997 vinyl 12" only release that was to be their last outing on XL Recordings. Not unlike 'Born Slippy', very like The Advent, Empirion conjured a majestic slab of bangin' techno in 'See Yourself' and now, some 9 years later, it has become somewhat of a rarity so we're very pleased to have both versions online and available to download. When we know more about the samples used, we'll let you know here. For more information about 'See Yourself', check out the Discography.

3. EMPIRION REMIX OF 'THE LOST TRIBE' BY TWELVETREES IN 1998

The B side of this 4 track vinyl 12" release showed off remixes by Empirion and Juno Reactor, but with just one album under their belt in 1998 and then little else, investment in the U.K. dance mix market by Dubbly/Mercury/I.L.S. Records was ill-conceived. 'Lost Tribe' (Remixes) was also released as a 6 track MCD on June 16th. 1998 in the US. This down tempo Empirion remix blends looped female vox into the characteristic warped electronica that made the vast majority of Empirion remixes very special indeed. While this rendition is a big improvement on the terminally bland original, it's just too blissed out for Empirion fans weaned on 'Ciao', 'PH1' et al - so make of it what you will! For more information about the Empirion mix of 'The Lost Tribe', check out the Discography.

4. EMPIRION TRACKS ON THE SONY PLAYSTATION GAME 'DEMOLITION RACER' IN 1999

Empirion were asked to record 4 tracks for a computer game called 'Demolition Racer' on the Sony Playstation console. The USA version was released on September 30th. 1999, published by Infogrames and developed by Pitbull Syndicate. The UK version was published by Atari. 'Demolition Racer' was a popular title in it's day, landing somewhere between 'Demolition Derby' and 'Gran Turismo'.

We are not absolutely sure if Empirion featured on the Sega Dreamcast sequel, namely 'Demolition Racer: No Exit' but as soon as we know, we'll update info here. Higher quality 128k versions will be online soon.

'Demolition' ('Demolition Racer' by Empirion) is driving techno obviously and you get some kind of twisted sample that kicks in at 1:21 to keep things motoring along very nicely indeed. 'Clear the Area' is dark. It broods, it builds, it boasts a wealth of sampled sci-fi dystopia. 'Dark Inside Me' ('The Voice Inside Me' by Empirion) blends the sampled title, breaks and bass with a sprinkling of mild trance fx and scratchy acid flux. The origin of samples used in these tracks will be posted here soon. For more information about 'Demolition Racer', check out the Discography.

New Information / Many thanks to Oz Morsley (received by e-mail):

'The version on the game had an 'Al pachino' vox samp and another sample from film, 'event horizon' (I think) so we took them out for the album version.' ('The Voice Inside Me')

[04.10.06 : 00.39]

New Information / Many thanks to Andrew Paterekas (received by e-mail):

'The track "Dark Inside Me" is a bit different from the track "The Voice Inside Me". Besides the sample of the woman saying "Dark Inside Me", the drums are a bit more old school drum 'n' bassy and it is also 30 seconds shorter than the other version. Another bit of info, it seems they were on the Dreamcast port of the game, but so far it looks like they licensed the same songs. Not 100% on that.'

[30.10.06 : 03.16]

New Information / Many thanks to Damon Fadjo (received by e-mail):

'Here is the edit of Clear The Area. Like The Pain, this seems to be just a trimmed down version of the full-length (nothing musically different, that I can notice). This one has the beginning and end cut.'

5. EMPIRION REMIX OF 'LUV U STILL' BY PRAGA KHAN IN 1998

Even tho' 2 years had passed since the much feted Empirion mix of 'Firestarter', 'Luv U Still' came from the same box, appearing on Dance Opera vinyl 12" and Fingerlickin' Good Records. 'Luv U Still (Our Love Is Eternal)' released on 'My Mind Is My Enemy/Luv U Still' by Never Records (NR 1046/vinyl, NR 6053/CD) clocks in at 7.00 and the Empirion remix of 'Luv U Still' at 7.01 so it's possible that they're one and the same. Discogs credit Empirion with 'Luv U Still (Our Love Is Eternal)', but the Praga Khan site does not.

[22.10.06 : 23.44]

New Information / Many thanks to Damon Fadjo (received by e-mail):

'I think that the (Empirion Remix) is the same as the (Our Love Is Eternal) version. Lords Of Acid / Praga Khan always seem to come up with extended names for their remixes, even though they are really just the (artist "x" remix) ... of course, if someone notices a difference I'm interested to know, but they sound the same to me. So, if the one you put up was the "(Empirion Remix)", then, from what I can tell, they are the same.'

6. EMPIRION MIXES OF 'RELEASE IT' BY HATE DEPT. IN 1998

Former 21st. Circuitry Records artist Hate Dept. was perhaps a curious remix job for Empirion who sent over an official 'Empirion Mix' for their 'Release It' MCD and an extra 'Dark Edit' which appeared on 'Marketing Tool', an earlier MCD release to promote their Restless debut CD 'Technical Difficulties'. Oddly, the 'Dark Edit' is ten seconds longer.

7. 'WHAT YOU ARE'

'What you are' was the final Empirion track ever recorded and played live by Oz and Jamie a few times before being released by the Atomic Reactor label on vinyl 12" in 2001 as Kloq with 'Blade' on the flipside. A version of 'What you are' was released on their 'Magnox' compilation CD and the Alfa Matrix compilation CD 'Cyberlab v3.0' in 2002. The vinyl 12" version running time is 8:23, the 'Magnox' version is 7:17. An edited version with a running time of 6:00 can be downloaded below. We'll have the official version and any other versions we can find at 128k available here to download soon. This track features a vocal loop performed by Doug McCarthy.

Empirion/Kloq - What you are (Edit) / Duration: 6.00 / unofficial

8. EMPIRION REMIX OF 'BAD ACTRESS' BY TERRORVISION IN 1996.

A rare track never released by EMI/Total Vegas for reasons unknown. 'It makes me feel high' is the vocal cut in there amidst strings and skittish electro from back in 1996 when an Empirion remix was what everyone wanted, apart from EMI it seems.

Terrorvision - Bad Actress (Empirion Remix) / Duration: 8.25 / unreleased (empirion master copy)

9. EMPIRION MIX OF 'FIRESTARTER' BY THE PRODIGY IN 1996.

For most of us this was the de facto Empirion remix, blending techno and body music in one fell swoop with none other than Mr. Keith Flint doing the honours. Their version of 'Firestarter' set phones ringing in record company offices the world over. It's so good that we are still tied to a 1 minute 38 second cut for you to download 11 years down the line.

The Prodigy - Firestarter (Empirion Mix) / Duration: 7.46 / XLS70CD / more (empirion master copy)

10. 'CIAO' - CIAO MIX (XL RECORDINGS - 1997)

The 'Ciao Mix' of 'Ciao' was released with 'B.E.T.A.' in 1997. Some confusion surrounds the different running times by format, 5.08 on CD and 7.00 on vinyl 12". This is a strong revision of the outstanding track on 'Advanced Technology', air lock bass and tribal drumming accompanies the 'Leave your name and a brief message after the seizure' and original 'Believing in God' samples. Excellent

11. EMPIRION MIX OF 'MIND' BY HYPERDEX-1-SECT IN 1997.

This was the first real point of contact between Empirion and the German Electro Scene in the remix field. 1-Sect was a shock collaboration between New Mind and X Marks The Pedwalk after Cyber-Tec Project/De Meyer recruited Marc Heal in 1996. 'Mind' appeared on 'Metachrome', their one and only release and this track featured on the US version (21st. Circuitry Records) but not in Europe (SPV/Synthetic Symphony). Quite possibly the darkest 9 minutes of music ever recorded.

Hyperdex-1-Sect - Mind (Empirion Mix) / Duration: 8.58 / 21C.CD31

12. EMPIRION MIX OF 'MENTALLY DULL' BY VITRO IN 1997.

Vitro were riding their very own Electro-House-Rock wave at the same time and in the same backyard as Empirion. In 1997 the highlight of their Independiente debut 'Mentally Dull' was this adjunct to the 4/4 beats of 'Advanced Technology'. Shouty lager boy wailings, shades of their earlier 'Bullet' mix + pounding techno body music kick on from what by this time was fast becoming the Empirion remix standard; another brilliant intro by Oz and Bob à la 1-Sect, The Prodigy and Fluke. Also released by Sony Music Entertainment (Australia) in the same year.

Vitro - Mentally Dull (Empirion Mix) / Duration: 7.20 / ISOM 4MS, 665033 2

13. EMPIRION MIXES OF 'STARS (IN THE ASCENDANT)' BY HUM IN 1996.

A good deal of mystery surrounds the Empirion mixes of 'Stars', none of which were commercially released. We know that 3 were recorded in total from Discogs information which you can download here at 192kbps. The Dedicated MCD and vinyl 12" (label unknown) were domestic pressings.

[05.03.07 : 21.33]

New Information / Many thanks to Damon Fadjo (received by e-mail):

Damon sent over all 3 mixes at 192kbps - thankyou!

14. EMPIRION MIX OF 'BULLET' BY FLUKE IN 1995.

The first major remix job for Empirion appeared on Virgin UK sub-label Circa Records and 'Bullet' by Fluke was the beneficiary. Released on vinyl 12", 2 x vinyl 12" (DJ Promo) and the 'Speedloader Remixes' CDS, distribution alone guaranteed their work a wider audience at a time when XL Recordings signed and then promptly sold the act to Beggars Banquet. This track opens with a claustrophobic passage of digitized noise before 4/4 beats, bleeps, bass and bristling electronica warp the original with sounds that would come to identify Empirion as innovators of their time.
